Two years on from Cyclone Gabrielle: A tribute to resilience and recovery

At QBE, our purpose is to enable a more resilient future by putting our customers at the centre of everything we do. In the wake of the cyclone, our mission was clear: support recovery efforts, and help our customers rebuild stronger than ever. Two years on we honour the determination that has shaped this recovery journey and continues to inspire us.

One remarkable story of resilience is that of ZIWI, New Zealand's biggest pet food exporter, representing more than 50 percent of pet food exports. Cyclone Gabrielle caused extensive disruption and damage to ZIWI’s state-of-the-art Hawke's Bay Super Kitchen, just seven months after the facility was built. Yet, through determination, collaboration, and innovative problem-solving, ZIWI not only recovered, but emerged stronger, ready to face the future with confidence.

Jonathan Groves, CEO & Managing Director of QBE New Zealand and Pacific, reflected on the recovery efforts:

"We’re incredibly proud to have supported ZIWI and other businesses as they faced and overcame immense challenges. These stories highlight the unbreakable spirit of New Zealand’s business community and the power of working together to turn adversity into opportunity."

Leanne Nel, Head of Claims added, “Every recovery journey tells a story of courage, resilience, and hope. Supporting our customers through the toughest times is why we’re here, and it drives us to do even more. As we continue to partner with our customers and communities, we remain focused on enabling a future where resilience isn’t just about bouncing back—it’s about building forward.”
